Can we talk?

Sure, but I’m at the Twisted Moose with Emma and Xander right now.

I know. I’m right outside. Miller is coming your way.

“I’ll be right back,” I say to my new friends.

I can call them friends now, right?

The minute I step outside, Braden grabs me and starts folding me against his body. However, because of where we are, the last week, and the overwhelming feelings inside of me, I panic.

“Let go of me!”

I step away the second his arms release me. It’s late, and so dark outside already; it replicates last Friday night too closely. This spot didn’t do anything to me earlier, so, why now? I didn’t want to tell Braden about what had happened, but after freaking out on him like this, I’ll have to.

“Shit!” I blurt and lean against the wall. When I peek up at him, his eyes are wide and his face is etched with worry. “Sorry, I’m as surprised by my reaction as you are.”

“Wow, what’s going on? Are you okay? Did I do something wrong?” He’s keeping a safe distance, not crowding me.

“Last week,” I start but stop to take a breath. “Last Friday night a man sort of forced himself on me here, in this exact same spot. I’m okay, though. Don’t worry.”

“Hunter, this isn’t okay.”

I can feel the tears coming. I don’t know why they are, but I don’t want to cry in front of him.

“Let it go, Braden. Please.” My voice cracks, sounding rusty. It always does when I’m going to cry.

The way he’s looking at me, it’s like he’s afraid I’m going to break, that I’m fragile. I don’t want that either. He nods once and looks off to the side, past me.

“Can we talk now?” I ask, hoping to change the vibe between us.

“Yeah, come with me. We can talk in my car.”

I follow him knowing damn well how this is going to end. Two adults known for losing control sitting in a car to “talk.” Sure thing.

As usual, Braden opens the passenger door for me first and invites me to sit in his car. This is the decisive moment between “can we” or “can’t we” be something? If only I knew.

Braden sits next to me. I study him, his lips, and eyes… even his hair. The way he always combs back his dark blond hair is so provocative.

“What?” he asks, and his shyness does nothing to de-escalate my growing attraction to him.

I shrug. “What did you want to talk about?” I can’t admit to gazing at him without blushing again.

“I don’t know how to get to the point without us having a two-hour conversation after, but I’ll give it a shot.”

“We can do this another time, if you’d like. There’s no rush.”

“I want to do this now.” His eyes are begging me to agree.

“Okay.”

“Shelly and I were together almost forever. I’ve known her since we were kids, and we were best friends before we became a couple. She was fun to be around until about two years ago, when she started asking me when we were going to get married and start a family.
